Toys, volunteers needed for local Toys for Tots

(Nov. 30) - As Christmas nears, not all children will experience joy on Christmas morning. However, the local Toys for Tots campaign is hoping that isn’t the case for Sikeston/Scott County children, but help is needed.

Applications for children are being taken until Dec. 6 and the child must live in Sikeston or Scott County to receive toys. Applications can be completed and dropped in the drop box at the YMCA in Sikeston.

Karen Chamberlain, who is coordinating the local Toys for Tots Campaign, said toys, toys and more toys are needed. The toys must be new.

There are several toy collection boxes for the public to fill at:

  • Security Locksmith
  • Ollie’s
  • Pizza Inn
  • All Dollar General locations in Sikeston
  • Family Dollar
  • DeWitt Auction
  • Buffalo Wild Wings
  • First Community State Bank
  • Personal Expressions
  • Sam’s Fine Jewelry
  • PetSense
  • Slushers
  • DGA in Morehouse
  • All three Food Giant locations
  • Sikeston Eagles
  • Sikeston Elks Lodge
  • Sikeston Bowling Center

Several of the manufacturers such as Carlisle Construction, Unilever and Orgill have toy collection boxes for their employees as well.

The applications will processed on Dec. 7-14 by volunteers and toy distribution will be from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, at the Sikeston Elks Lodge at 349 Dona Street.

Anyone with questions or who want to volunteer should contact Chamberlain at 573-380-9540.

“In previous years, Sikeston has had as many as 1,387 children who have benefitted from Toys for Tots on Christmas morning,” Chamberlain said. “The community’s help is greatly appreciated, and we appreciate every person and organization who assists. Times are hard, and families struggle during the holiday season. We want every child to experience Christmas joy.”
