CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PLAN FOR 2025-29 APPROVED

During Monday’s Sikeston City Council meeting, the city’s Capital Improvement Plan for 2025-29 was approved.

Sikeston City Manager Jonathan Douglass said the CIP is not a budget but a tool that helps as the city moves into the FY2025 budget process, which will begin this spring.

The top ranked item on the CIP is the replacement of Fire Station 2, which has already begun. Douglass said an architect and construction manager has already been hired and the city is currently waiting for USDA loan approval.

Another item on the CIP is basic infrastructure needs including stormwater detention projects that would help prevent flooding.

Some other projects included on the CIP are:

  • Automated locks for restroom doors in Sikeston parks
  • Sound/video system for City Council chambers
  • City Hall improvements
  • Several park projects including a maintenance road at the old Bootheel Golf Course that will provide an emergency outlet at big events like the rodeo and balloon festival.

The CIP contains far more projects than the city will realistically be able to afford, however they are all projects will value to the city and its residents. City leaders will use the CIP to weigh the value of those projects against each other, and eventually choose which projects should be funded in upcoming budgets.

The development of the CIP helps city leaders look beyond the current or upcoming budget year and think about the community’s needs several years into the future.
