The following Council actions took place during yesterday’s Council meeting:
Approved Bill #6213, which will update the excessive strength charge fees from the Board of Municipal Utilities (BMU) for commercial or industrial users with excessive sewer discharges of strength and total suspended solids (TSS). BMU proposed the updated rate to prevent excessive sewer discharges that disrupt the sewer plant and to reimburse BMU for this disruption.
Appointed Lori Caldwell to the SEMO University – Sikeston Advisory Council. She will replace Timothy Greenway, who resigned from this position.
Accepted the donation of 131 N. New Madrid Street from the Moore family in exchange for a tax gift letter. This building is currently being used as the City’s Municipal Court.
Authorized the request for 11 additional part-time/seasonal staff workers to work weekend tournaments at the recreation complex for the months of May-July. The projected revenue from concession sales will cover the costs of the additional workers.
Approved the replacement of the City’s fuel pump and fuel line between the city pump and Board of Municipal Utilities tanks. This bid was awarded to Midsouth (Cape Girardeau, MO) in the amount of $27,183.
Authorized staff to proceed with the 2021 Street & Drainage Improvement Program.
Approved a 24-month extension option to Unilever for 16 acres of land located in the North Industrial Park. This option term will expire December 21, 2022.
Mayor Burch commented on the educational “Wear Because You Care” campaign that was created to promote awareness and the importance of wearing masks in public to control the spread of Covid-19. Several videos have been posted on social media, including the Mayor and Council members urging citizens to wear masks, and also of employees wearing their masks in the workplace. Mayor Burch stated that there has been positive feedback from this campaign with more businesses wanting to be included.
With no further action taken, the meeting was adjourned into Executive Session. The next Council meeting is schedule for Monday, January 25 at 5:00 p.m.
