Department: Public Works FLSA Status: Eligible
Note: Employees are classified as "Skilled Workers" only, after successful completion of on-the-job training and their probation period. Newly hired individuals enter as "Entry Maintenance Workers," grade 9.
Supervision Received: Work performed under the direction of leadman or supervisor or his 
designee.
Supervision Exercised: None, or as assigned.
Responsibilities: Performs general and skilled groundskeeping and maintenance duties in public right-a-way and parks. Assists with snow and ice removal.
Street Department: Constructs and repairs complex concrete structures (streets, curbs, sidewalks, etc.) utilizing controlled layouts, form construction, saw cutting, concrete removal, placement of 
joining materials and concrete finishing utilizing manual and machine tools. Sets up and manages traffic control zones utilizing signage and flaggers. Performs maintenance on historic brick streets including removal and replacement. Performs construction and maintenance of simple and complex buildings including rough and finish carpentry, and basic plumbing, electrical and HVAC improvements. Constructs installs and maintains stormwater systems including pipe networks, concrete junctions and open channels. Performs maintenance of public right of way including public 
drainage basins while open to traffic including mowing, edging, striping, sign maintenance and grade stabilization. Removes storm debris, trees/limbs, snow and ice as needed using heavy equipment, 
trucks and hand tools and other tasks as assigned.
Parks Department: Constructs and repairs complex concrete structures (curbs, sidewalks, dugouts etc.) utilizing controlled layouts, form construction, saw cutting, concrete removal, placement of joining materials and concrete finishing utilizing manual and machine tools. Performs construction and maintenance of simple and complex buildings including rough and finish carpentry, and basic plumbing, electrical and HVAC improvements. Constructs installs and maintains stormwater systems including pipe networks, concrete junctions and open channels. Constructs and maintains athletic fields for public use including controlled layouts, placing engineered fill, laser grading, measuring and marking locations for defined points (goals, bases, mounds, etc) and general everyday maintenance (mowing, grading, marking, etc.). Conducts Park operations and maintenance duties to ensure assigned areas are maintained in a safe, high quality, and aesthetically pleasing condition. Performs routine grounds keeping duties including, but no limited to, mowing grass, trimming trees and shrubbery, removing weeds, applying mulch, etc. Oversees and participates in 
landscaping, carpentry, concrete work, trash removal, etc. as necessary to maintain the Parks Division grounds and structures. Performs janitorial duties such as cleaning and stocking park facility restrooms and providing set-ups for the Clinton Building. Removes storm debris, trees/limbs, snow and ice as needed using heavy equipment, trucks and hand tools and other tasks as assigned.
Provides maintenance assistance during set-up, presentation, and clean-up of special events as required.
Essential Functions of Job: Ability to perform work out-of-doors in all weather conditions with temperatures ranging from below freezing to above 100 F; ability to sit, stand, crawl, kneel, twist, 
stoop, and climb for extended periods of time; ability to pull, push, lift and/or carry objects up to 80 lbs.; ability to use and/or operate hand-held and motorized tools or machinery; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to hear standard equipment alarms (buzzers, beepers, etc.). Ability to work in confined spaces. Ability to complete written reports as assigned. 
Must possess ability to work in an environment containing dust, pollen, and chemicals, such as, but not limited to pesticides and herbicides.
Knowledge, Skills and Other Job Requirements: Must possess general knowledge of construction practices and techniques; knowledge of job site preparation for street, sidewalk, and curb construction; and/or general knowledge of landscaping techniques and nursery practices. Knowledge of fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides or other chemicals and their application preferred. Must possess or complete by end of initial employment qualifying period a Class B, Commercial Driver's License with air brakes and tanker classifications. Must be able to read and comprehend written instructions. Must exhibit tact and courtesy when dealing with general public and co-workers. Upon appointment or by end of probation period, must reside within a thirty (30) mile radius of 
Sikeston City Limits. Must maintain active landline or cellular telephone. May be required to work irregular hours, as needed.
Equipment Used or Operated: Communication radios, general hand tools, power tools, motorized and automotive equipment such as trucks, tractors, and mowers. Light and heavy construction equipment such as, but not limited to, backhoe, road grader, and street sweeper. Operates street repair equipment such as asphalt roller and crack sealing machinery, and other equipment as 
required.
Employment Preconditions: Applicant shall be required to submit to physical fitness testing, and drug and alcohol screening prior to employment and at any time during employment. The undersigned, before assignment to an employment position as described in the foregoing job description, herewith, acknowledges he/she has read said job descriptions and each subpart thereof and consents to its content. Additionally, applicant indicates his/her consent to any testing provided for in the written job description and authorizes the City of Sikeston to conduct background checks, such as, but not limited to, prior employment, driving violation and criminal histories, as may be required for said position.
