City of Sikeston receives new dump truck

Just in time for the first possible snow event of the season, the new dump truck for the City of Sikeston was delivered on Wednesday afternoon.

Part of the Capital Improvement Plan, the purchase of the tandem axle truck was approved by the Sikeston City Council in August of 2021, and it took 16 months for the truck to arrive.

“We’re glad it’s here,” said Sikeston Street Superintendent Brian Dial.

The truck is outfitted with a snowplow and is ready to pretreat roads with salt brine.

Dial said the new truck will use a lot less salt to cover roads than previous trucks.

“(The truck) won’t waste the salt because it is computer programmed where our other one wasn’t,” Dial said. “It’ll save the city a lot of money in wasted salt.”

The truck comes just in time too as the National Weather Service is calling from 1-3 inches of snow on Thursday afternoon and evening making road conditions slick.

Dial said he hopes to have the truck ready to go Thursday afternoon, as they will put stickers on the doors Thursday morning while also making sure the insurance is all in line.

During a snow event, the City of Sikeston is divided into four quadrants with the city’s four snowplows working simultaneously.

Sikeston Street and Park Division personnel will work 12-hour shifts, seven days a week until the streets are passable.

Streets are prioritized with major arteries, hills and curves being the first treated and cleared.
